Crazy Car Crashes

While crashes are a guaranteed part of any NASCAR race, massive wrecks are particularly common at NASCAR’s two largest tracks: Daytona International Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway – where drivers are headed this weekend for the GEICO 500. Earlier this season, FTW explained why so many crashes happen at these tracks where drivers are forced to race in groups. So ahead of this weekend’s highly anticipated GEICO 500 at one of NASCAR’s fastest tracks, here are seven unbelievable, flipping car wrecks from past Talladega Superspeedway races. 1. Bobby Allison’s 1987 crash Now 30 years old, this terrible crash led to NASCAR implementing a restrictor plate requirement for cars racing at Talladega and Daytona, which essentially limits their speed in the name of safety on the 2.66- and 2.5-mile long tracks. 2. Rusty Wallace barrel rolls across the finish line In contention for a win, this car flips so hard it’s shredded to pieces by the time it stops rolling. 3. Carl Edwards flips on the last lap The not officially retired but not currently racing Carl Edwards is more known for his celebration flips after a win. And while he came really close to victory in this 2009 race, he was lucky to walk away from this flip. Several fans suffered non-life-threatening injuries in this accident. 4. Elliott Sadler’s 2003 flip First Sadler’s car flips and lands on its roof, and for a second, it looks like that’s it. But somehow the car keeps on rolling for a terrifying ride that looks like it’s never-ending. 5. Ken Schrader’s 1995 disaster Schrader’s car flew in every direction, and as the commentator put it, it flipped “side over side, end over end.” 6. Tony Stewart wrecks the field Stewart made a pass for the lead on the last lap of this 2012 Talladega race, but his car went airborne and caused one of the biggest wrecks in NASCAR history, taking out 25 cars. 7. Chris Buescher become a chain-reaction victim Just last year in the GEICO 500, then-rookie Buescher went flying, doing three full, sideways flips before miraculously landing upright. “She likes to have fun after the job, but nothing crazy,” the friend added. Indiere and her live-in caretaker were not injured, police said. Anderson and an unidentified man riding in the car suffered minor injuries.

The car tore through the kitchen and busted through the flowery wallpapered rear wall. It finally came to a stop when it hit a tree in the backyard garden. It struck with such force it shook neighboring homes. “I never heard brakes,” said next-door neighbor Kimberly Steinberg, who called 911.

Driving in Russia is hazardous: Last year, 200,000 traffic accidents killed 28,000 people. (More than 32,000 died in car accidents in the United States in 2011, a much lower figure per capita.)
