There are many reasons Americans will choose to purchase one car over another. Brand loyalty, cost, and customer service all can have an impact on which cars Americans decide to purchase. Of course, the quality of the vehicle itself — its reliability, handling, and safety — is likely an important consideration for most buyers. In the latest edition of it annual Car Brands Report Card, Consumer Reports ranked 30 major car makes based on these factors. According to the report, Audi produces the best overall vehicles of any major brand, while Fiat rates as the worst among the 30 brands.

While buyers may not consider it a priority in their purchases, quality and safety do appear to have a meaningful impact on sales. Among the top-rated makes, nearly all were among the 10 top-selling brands in the United States in 2015 or had among the largest increases in sales compared to 2014. Sales of only one of the better-rated brands on the list — Volkswagen, which had to deal with its emissions scandal last year — declined over that time. Meanwhile, annual vehicle sales at Fiat, Dodge, and Cadillac, all among the worst-rated brands, declined.

However, it is ‘The Big Three’ that united the best American car brands and survived through times. They are General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler US. Joined by several other companies, these giants form what is one of the most influential car industries in the world.

These brands were lucky to make it through the history of ups and downs while America has seen many great car manufacturers that were discontinued due to financial or marketing reasons. One of the oldest car manufacturers in the world, Oldsmobile, was dropped by GM in 2004. Pontiac, Saturn and brutal SUV brand Hummer fell victims to GM major restructuring in 2010. Plymouth resulted surplus to Chrysler development plans in 2001. The same applied to Ford division Mercury, in 2011.
Audi, Subaru and Lexus make up the three best auto brands overall, the magazine says in its annual listing of top brands. Only one Detroit brand, Buick, made its way into the Top 10 — at seventh place, with an overall score that tied Mazda. Fiat, Jeep and Mitsubishi had the three worst scores.
J.D. Power, one of the standards for consumer product reviews, also produces a Customer Service Index Study each year. The 2016 edition of the report has similar results to Consumer Reports’ findings on reliability. The majority of the top 10 makes for overall quality are also among the top 10 in J.D. Power’s ranking as well. All five of the worst car brands, according to Consumer Reports, are among the least dependable makes according to J.D. Power.
The Consumer Reports data cover 30 brands based on road-test performance, reliability, safety performance and active safety aids, and owner satisfaction. We also reviewed the results of JD Power’s 2016 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, which rates car makes based on the number of problems per 100 vehicles. We also considered 2015 U.S> sales, as well as the change in sales from the previous year, as listed in manufacturer press releases.

Lincoln boasts notorious history as one of the best American luxury brands, being Ford’s division for most of its time. The manufacturer supplied limousines for many US presidents, including J.F.Kennedy. In March 2015 Lincoln revealed the concept of returning flagship model Continental that should boost the company’s presence in emerging Chinese luxury market.
Some models are familiar names on the list. Toyota’s Camry, for instance, won for the first time in four years, although it has shown up five times in 20 years. Subaru has also done particularly well. The Forester won for the second consecutive year as small SUV and Impreza won for the fifth time for compact car.
Cadillac is an old American luxury car brand, formed on Henry Ford Company base and later acquired by GM. Cadillac set the American standard of V8 engines, was often used for institutional and governmental purposes and provided platforms for limousines, ambulances, funeral vehicles. The company’s golden years fell to 1960s, with de Ville and Eldorado being major hits.
Established in 1900 as automobile parts’ supplier, Dodge Brothers produced the first vehicle in 1914. The company soon merged with Chrysler and was positioned as mid-range car manufacturer. The brand has been also known for producing trucks. However, after Fiat takeover, Dodge was deprived of mass-market models and trucks and focused on performance vehicles, producing modern American sports cars.
Buick is the oldest American made car brand with over a hundred-year history that stood at the origins of GM. The marque is positioned in between Chevrolet and Cadillac in the company’s hierarchy and its models are basically rebranded Opel vehicles. Buick cars are sold at the markets where the German brand is not present, namely US, Canada, Mexico and China.
Tesla Motors is a revolutionary electric cars and electric powertrains manufacturer, founded in California in 2003. With a goal to make fully electric cars affordable and convenient, Tesla keeps introducing innovations to the market and provides automotive giants like Daimler and Toyota with their in-house electric components. The brand created its own ‘Supercharger’ station network, available to Tesla S owners. This luxury 4-door sedan has become a symbol of a modern electric car.
With a history of more than 100 years, GM is definitely one of the key players of the industry, with a global reach and a significant influence for all auto manufacturers worldwide. Mostly known for its classic Buick and the affordable Chevrolets, General Motors has also made itself famous for the powerful muscle car Camaro and the lean Corvette. Overall 2013 sales place General Motors third in the world’s top automakers.
Founded by Henry Ford in the beginning of the 20th century, this US car company was an important factor in the industrial revolution and in overall automated manufacturing processes. Commercialized vehicles range from the more accessible ones, sold under the typical Ford brand, to luxurious Lincoln. Ford is one of the best in the American auto manufacturers proving itself over time.
Fiercely battling GM’s Camaro, the Mustang might actually manage to make it overseas in 2015. With a fresh look for the 2015 Ford Mustang that’s sportier than ever, Ford hopes shaking sales might actually stabilize. The major challenge for this legendary pony remains the same as for its all-time competitors in the muscle car league (Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger): maintaining sales at a decent level. With the upcoming generations, manifesting little to no interest in what these vehicles have to offer, the effort may have to be significant.
The Biddle Motor Car Company is another american automobile manufacturer that specialized in creating retro style vehicles. They were the first one to introduce dual side-mounted wire wheels, step plates, v-shaped radiators, and angular cycle fenders to the US. However, because of its inability to survive the tensions of mass production, the company was soon sold.
