Top 10 Car Brands

One great car—or clunker—doesn’t define a whole brand. Neither does its reputation (good or bad) relieve you of the need to examine a vehicle carefully. But our long-standing and comprehensive analysis of car brands reveals that you can glean important information by knowing a brand’s output over time. To determine which car brands consistently deliver vehicles that serve consumers well, we tabulate the overall score, road-test score, and predicted reliability results for each tested model of a brand. We then average those scores at the brand level. This average overall score is used to rank the car brands as an indicator of who makes the best cars. Topping our Ratings are the luxury brand Audi and mainstream marque Subaru. Only vehicles that are on the market and that we tested factor into the equation. The rankings don’t account for corporate practices or brand perceptions. Hence, Audi and Volkswagen diesel vehicles that have been pulled from dealerships—following their recall and stop-sale last year for cheating on EPA emissions tests—are not included in our car brands scoring. Consumer Reports strongly believes that Volkswagen AG, the maker of VW and Audi vehicles, should be held accountable for manipulating emissions testing with its vehicles. In creating the car brands Report Card, we aggregate road-test performance, reliability, safety performance and active safety aids, and owner satisfaction. Brands with a lineup of mature, incrementally updated vehicles tended to rise to the top. For instance, Toyota’s middling road-test score was balanced by strong reliability; Mercedes-Benz’s strong road tests were offset by below par reliability. And Honda, Nissan, and Chrysler suffered due to problematic new transmissions. Note that car brands must have at least two models with test and reliability data to be included. Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Maserati, Ram, Smart, and Tesla lack sufficient data. (Download a PDF of this car-brand information.)

Consistency is key. Consumer Reports’ annual analysis reveals that some brands exhibit high-level performance across their lines. Many others do not. In our 2017 analysis of which car brands make the best vehicles, Audi takes the top position for the second year in a row, followed by Porsche, BMW, Lexus, and Subaru. Although these are the same top five as last year, Porsche and BMW rose, and Lexus and Subaru moved down. This year Chrysler, Acura, Infiniti, and Cadillac were the most upwardly mobile. Chrysler rose seven places, and the other three brands each moved up six places compared with last year. Some of the standout brands benefit from a tiny roster. Tesla, the highest-ranked American brand, earns its position based on just two models. Likewise, Chrysler has one of the higher average road-test scores, but that’s also based on just two models: the 300 and Pacifica (low Overall Scores keep both from being recommended). Fiat, Jeep, Mitsubishi, and Land Rover remain stubbornly stuck at the bottom of the list. To arrive at the rankings, we averaged the Overall Scores for new cars from every major automotive brand based on the vehicles we have purchased and tested, then we ranked them. Brands with just one tested model were omitted.

There are many reasons Americans will choose to purchase one car over another. Brand loyalty, cost, and customer service all can have an impact on which cars Americans decide to purchase. Of course, the quality of the vehicle itself — its reliability, handling, and safety — is likely an important consideration for most buyers. In the latest edition of it annual Car Brands Report Card, Consumer Reports ranked 30 major car makes based on these factors. According to the report, Audi produces the best overall vehicles of any major brand, while Fiat rates as the worst among the 30 brands.

While buyers may not consider it a priority in their purchases, quality and safety do appear to have a meaningful impact on sales. Among the top-rated makes, nearly all were among the 10 top-selling brands in the United States in 2015 or had among the largest increases in sales compared to 2014. Sales of only one of the better-rated brands on the list — Volkswagen, which had to deal with its emissions scandal last year — declined over that time. Meanwhile, annual vehicle sales at Fiat, Dodge, and Cadillac, all among the worst-rated brands, declined.

1 BMW Love the new BMW X1 in brown color (as it can be seen on webpage). Many people think it’s too expensive but for such a great car the price is OK. BMW is best in class-Luxury car manufacturer in the world. It stick to its motto of “the ultimate driving machine” and it will continue to deliver its goods to driving enthusiasts around the world. I am in the process to purchase my first, and hope to become a BMW loyalist for life. Yes BMW is the purest brand of all the bunch. Most of them are not real brands and are affected by belonging to a larger dominating source (VW) (GM) These sub-brands are a mixture of parts, mixed and then called a name. BMW and Mercedes and Toyota are truly original to their product. DAmb daniel V 272 Comments

The JD Power Vehicle Dependability Survey gives as strong a clue as any as to how reliable a car might be. The results of the 2016 survey, which asked 13,000 car owners about any problems they’d experienced with their vehicles, focused on cars registered between 2013 and 2015.  There are some surprise movers in 2016’s survey with luxury car manufacturers not doing so well, but more mainstream brands heading the pack. New 2017 JD Power Vehicle Dependability data will be available soon, but for now this is the most up-to-date information we have. Here’s how the top 20 shaped up.
