In the 1936 logo, the M shaped curve was inspired by the emblem of Hiroshima city. The 1991 and 1992 logos symbolized a wing, the Sun and a circle of light. Mazda’s current logo, nicknamed the “owl” logo, was designed by Rei Yoshimara in 1997. The stylized “M” was meant to look like stretched wings, but many people saw a stylized tulip instead.

The Peugeot logo features a lion, and stems back to the mid 19th century when the firm manufactured mainly steel goods and saw blades. The lion represented attributes Peugeot highlighted in the blades, such as strong teeth and the swift cut.

There are also dozens of large car companies in the world (many more if you counted the defunct ones), and we couldn’t fit every single one in this article. And so Audiwerke GmbH was born in 1910. In 1932, four car makers Audi, Horch, DKW, and Wanderer merged to form Auto Union. The logo of Auto Union, four interlinked rings that would later become the modern Audi logo, was used only in racing cars – the four factories continued to produce cars under their own names and emblems.

The Alfa Romeo logo is circular with a blue border containing the words ‘Alfa Romeo’. In the center are two heraldic symbols linked to the city of Milan, Italy, where the firm was founded. The red on white cross comes from the city’s emblem while the crowned serpent eating a Moor is a Biscione. The Biscione used to be set on a white background, but this was removed during an update to the logo in 2015. The type face was also changed.
The BMW logo is a circle with a black border containing the brand-name. The central area is divided into blue and white quarter circles, the colors of Bavaria, where the firm is based. The lettering and original design were inherited from the logo of the Rapp Motorenwerke aircraft firm from which BMW descends.
The Buick logo features three shields inside a circular border. It is a simplified version of an earlier Buick logo which featured the three shields in red, white and blue, with a deer head, sash and cross on each shield. Today just the sashes remain.
The Corvette logo features two crossed flags. On the right is a black and white chequered flag like that used in racing. On the left, a red flag contains the logo of Chevrolet, Corvette’s parent company, and a fleur-de-lis which was on founder Louis Chevrolet’s family crest.

The Rolls-Royce logo comprises two ‘R’s set in a rectangle with the words ‘Rolls’ and ‘Royce’ above and below. A small statue of a woman leaning forward with wings, known as The Spirit of Ecstasy, sits on the bonnet of the firm’s cars but is not used as a logo.
The Tesla logo is a stylized letter T which sits above the brand name in a mainly white on red color scheme. The exact meaning of the imagery is unknown, but it’s thought the way the T is drawn could represent a pole in an electric motor or a Tesla coil. It used to sit on a shield, and the bottom of the shield still forms part of the grille on the firm’s cars, underneath the logo.
The Volkswagen logo features the letters V and a W, one on top of the other, contained in a circle of the same width and set on a blue background. It was said to have been dreamt up by engineer Franz Reimspiess in an office competition to design a logo for the firm.
The circular BMW logo was a representation of a spinning propeller of a Bavarian Luftwaffe. At the time, aircrafts were painted with regional colors and the colors of the Bavarian flag were white and blue. It is said that the pilot saw the propeller as alternating segments of white and blue, hence the logo. The roundel was a nod to Karl Rapp’s original company.
In 1998, Cadillac had a new design philosophy called “art and science” and had its logo redesigned. Gone were the six birds called the merlettes, the crown, and the entire fabricated de La Mothe family crest as the company tried to shake up its stodgy image. The new logo made its debut a few years later, looking positively like it was made by Piet Mondrian!
During World War I, Renault manufactured light tanks for the Allies called the Renault FT-17. This was so popular that after the war, Renault actually changed its logo into a tank. The diamond shape was introduced in 1925 and remained until today. The modern Renault logo was created in 1972 by Victor Vasarely , the father of Op art (or optical art).
The VW logo itself was supposedly designed by Franz Xavier Reimspiess, an employee of Porsche, during an office logo design competition. He was given a one time payment of 100 Reichsmarks (about $400).
Car company logos can provide interesting insights about the history of the automotive industry, and they are a very important part of consumer brand identification. Next time you pop your hood to check your car’s oil or refill the washer fluid, take a glance at the logo as well. This symbol represents where your car’s manufacturer has been and where it’s going in the future.
Now, there's a little part of me believes that there's some guy locked away deep in a windowless corner of the RenCen, a secret Holden fan who approved the lion logo to come Stateside. I like to think that this is a sort of enthusiast shout-out that 99% of the American population won't recognize, but is something like an easter egg shuffled through the vast bureaucracy of General Motors.
The griffen logo, featuring the head of a mythological beast that had a body of a lion and head and wings of an eagle, came from Vadis-Scania, a truck manufacturer that merged with SAAB (airplane) company. The griffen was a coat of arms of the province Scania.
