Jayne Mansfield Car Crash

”Her head was attached as much as mine is,” says Jim Roberts, gently dismissing a longstanding myth about Jayne Mansfield’s grisly demise. The accepted version (now playing in the movie ”Crash”) has it that Mansfield was beheaded when she died in a car accident just outside of New Orleans on June 29, 1967. Roberts says the beheading part is hooey, and he should know — he was her undertaker. ”People always figured wrong about Jayne,” he laments. ”About the way she lived and the way she died.”These days Roberts, 77, lives in cozy retirement above the New Orleans funeral home where he worked for 41 years. He’s unaware that Mansfield’s death has been reduced, by some, to a pop-culture reference point, but he probably wouldn’t like it. He was a fan, and for years he kept a scrapbook of clips, pictures and old obituaries. ”She was such a fine-looking person,” Roberts says. ”And she couldn’t stand to be away from her children.” As he also recalls, Mansfield died in a sedan that slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler that was shrouded in ”fog” from a mosquito-spray truck. The impact drove the car’s engine into the front seat, killing the actress, two adults and a Chihuahua (who rode up front) but sparing Mansfield’s children. Mansfield’s wig was thrown to the side of the road, where it was mistaken in news stories for her head.Headless or not, Mansfield did not go gently. Her face and body, Roberts allows, were ”as bad as you get in this business,” and he worked all night, valiantly trying to reconstruct her face before her relatives arrived. ”She had a lot of makeup with her,” he remembers, ”and I used it all.” Continue reading the main story

After a series of marital rows around Jayne’s ambitions, infidelity, and animals, they decided to annul the marriage. It was a long process. In February 1955, Jayne filed for separate maintenance, and in August 1956, Paul filed for custody of their daughter Jayne Marie. Jayne divorced Paul Mansfield in California on October 21, 1956. Paul Mansfield divorced her in Texas on March 16, 1957, on the grounds of mental cruelty. They finally received their divorce papers on January 8, 1958. After the divorce, she decided to keep “Mansfield” as her professional name. Paul Mansfield remarried, settled into the public relations business and moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee—but failed to win custody suits over Jayne Marie or restrain her from traveling abroad with her mother.

The Famous Nipple-Slip IncidentWith her career now beginning to heat up, Jayne Mansfield would hire an aggressive new agent who stopped at nothing to get the actress in front of the press. At one particular event, Jayne’s ample bosom would become the featured attraction when Jayne, seated next to Sophia Loren and wearing a low cut dress, would be photographed with Loren’s eyes enviously affixed to the blonde star’s cleavage where one of her nipples had accidentally taken a peek. Despite the photograph becoming an international sensation, the world media was quick to condemn Jayne’s stunts as cheap publicity-seeking of the highest order. Nothing seemed too outrageous as Jayne began to find more and more ways of exposing her assets. In fact, eventually Jayne would pose as the 1955 Playboy Playmate of the Month, which garnered her more of the attention she so craved, but was looked upon negatively by those in charge of her career direction. When dropped from her studio contract, Jayne would move on to garner the lead in a Broadway sex comedy called Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter. As long as she was showing her breasts, the star seemed unstoppable.

Jayne met Paul Mansfield, a popular student at Highland Park High School, Dallas, at a party on Christmas Eve of 1949. On May 6, 1950, they married in Fort Worth, Texas. At the time of their marriage, Jayne was 17, and three months pregnant. Paul Mansfield was 20. While most major biographies put the date at May 6, some sources say the marriage was on May 10, 1950. According to biographer Raymond Strait, she had an earlier “secret” marriage on January 28, after which she conceived her first child. On November 8, 1950, Mansfield gave birth to their daughter, Jayne Marie Mansfield. Some sources cite Paul Mansfield as the father of her child, while others allege the pregnancy was the result of date rape.
