This kind of glorification of the celebrity “screw up” feels outdated in 2017, where there is at least some discussion around the impact celebrity can have on mental health. “There was a truth to Britney’s head shaving incident—cutting away her beauty, her celebrity image—and to Amy ‘s public breakdowns,” says Sean Redmond, editor of Celebrity Cultures. “They are both revealing, albeit in different ways, of the fraught psychology of celebrity culture, its gendered nature and the loneliness that fame can induce.”

In one of the most recent tragic car crashes, “Fast and the Furious” actor Paul Walker died when the Porsche he was a passenger in smashed into a tree and exploded north of Los Angeles on Nov. 30, 2013. The 40-year-old and the car’s driver, his financial adviser Roger Rodas, both perished.

But in the world of celebrity, 2007 was a year of extremes. Britney shaved her head, Paris Hilton went to jail, Lindsay Lohan went to rehab three times, Nicole Richie served 82 minutes of a prison sentence, Anna Nicole Smith tragically died of an overdose—the details of which were picked apart in the celebrity press. In the UK, Pete Doherty and Amy Winehouse were permanent fixtures in the British red tops. Headlines screamed of drug abuse, dropping weights, rehab admissions and parole violations. And this is all before the sidebar of shame was anywhere near what we know today.

Rehab, surely, was the word of the year in 2007. Anyone labelled a “trainwreck” was packed off there—voluntarily or not. But a decade on, celebrity culture has shifted dramatically. Instagram is where the battle for celebrity status plays out: Taylor Swift, the Kardashians, the Hadids—they’re all preened and filtered and branded to perfection. Our stars “eat clean”, they don’t drink, they don’t smoke. If they’re papped, it’s more likely to be when they’re buying an iced coffee than puking out of a taxi. The biggest celeb shocker of the year—Kim Kardashian’s nude selfie—wasn’t an act of recklessness or mental breakdown, but an expertly planned pseudo-political statement. Even Miley Cyrus is so 2013.

“These wounds,” wrote JG Ballard in his novel, Crash, “formed the key to a new sexuality, born from a perverse technology. The images of these wounds hung in the gallery of his mind, like exhibits in the museum of a slaughterhouse.” Stephen Bayley’s fugue on the psychodramas of fatal car crashes involving famous people hinges on another of Ballard’s remarks: “Deep assignments run through all our lives; there are no coincidences.”

This crash was fatal. It killed an up-and-coming comedy star and his close friend. That said, you can’t expect that someone willing to drive 130mph on a public road after a night of heavy drinking to live a long and fruitful life. As with most Porsche GT3 crashes, there wasn’t much left of the car itself. This was a tragic accident, but one that could have been prevented.

Bayley’s speculations on the “there are no accidents” riff are occasionally overwrought. However, chapters such as those on the guitarist Eddie Cochran, glam-rocker Marc Bolan, and the posh-flaky Swinging London figure Tara Browne, are exemplary in their connections of cars, cultural detail, and fatal crashes.

In a shockingly tragic death, Hollywood golden girl turned Princess of Monaco Grace Kelly died in a car accident on Sept. 14, 1982 at 52 years old. Princess Grace was driving on a local road with her daughter Princess Caroline, when their car plunged off a cliff. There was speculation as to who was driving the car, but it was ultimately decided that Princess Grace was behind the wheel, and that she may have suffered a stroke, causing the car to go off the road.

Celebrities are often known for owning the biggest and the best of everything and as TMZ and US magazine shows us, this includes cars. It’s not uncommon for wealthy people to have nice things. That wouldn’t be much of a story. You’d nod your head and say, “Oh good, something else I’ll never own.” That’s why we’d like to present you with a list of the most memorable celebrity car wrecks. Because if you can’t own a Pagani Zonda or a Rolls Royce Silver Phantom, then you should at least be able to smirk at the crazy-wealthy individuals who bought cars they couldn’t drive.

Of course, now, the rare car crash moments turn into clickbait—something partylikeits2007 says “has much greater consequences we likely won’t feel nostalgic about”. The tabloids and gossip websites are no more opposed to shocking headlines and voyeurism than they were in 2007—just look at the way Kanye West’s recent breakdown was jumped on. And as these things happen: with Amanda Bynes, or Kanye West, or whoever else—we tweet at them, we laugh about it, we show our friends, and the media reports their every move with “you’ll never believe what this celebrity has done” headlines – even for the most benign of activities.

Death Drive is an intriguing selective history of a phenomenon that has, itself, become history. As Bayley says, the eerie gravity of the cars-celebrity-death nexus has largely evaporated, not least because A-listers rarely drive any more.

Bayley’s turn of phrase is waspishly delightful. The mid-1950s TR2 sports car (in which the legendary French horn player Dennis Brain died) is “a sleeves-rolled-up, chunky forearms kind of car, which provided a pleasing one-dimensional performance for men using hair-grooming products.” The part of Surrey where the 1958 Grand Prix champion Mike Hawthorn lived was “a world of pine-scented private roads, gin and tonic, loose-fitting underwear, approximate dental hygiene and amiable bigotry”.

The news has successfully beat this story to death and then picked it apart with its wild speculation and spreading of groundless rumors. Early stories claimed mechanical failure, and the wife of the friend of Paul Walker, who was actually driving the car, is now pursuing a lawsuit against Porsche. Inspectors of the crime scene determined that speed, not mechanical failure, was the culprit.
