Car Games For Couples

While a road trip can be fun, car trouble will instantly stop you in your tracks. Since I have taken hundreds of road trips over the years, I can share countless adventures and misadventures from the open road. One “misadventure” that has happened several times is car trouble. Getting stranded on the side of the road in the middle of no where is not fun, and has happened to me a few times. I finally learned my lesson, and do everything in my power to get road trip ready BEFORE hitting the road. Not only do I pack some snacks, plan some road trip games, and fill up on gas; I do things like check my windshield wipers, rotate my tires, check my tire pressure and get an oil change, if needed. Some of these things I have to take my car into the shop to get serviced, but some I can do on my own!

I think we all have a good time playing games like Cards Against Humanity, but it’s hard to play in a cramped car while one of us is responsible for keeping the rest of us alive. So, play a few games that will have you laughing, and let you keep your eyes on the road (and yeah, take lots of selfies).

Car Games For Couples

Before the days of smartphones and tablets, people used road trip games to have fun in the car during long journeys.  Instead of being glued to a screen, you can learn more about your friends or family and create some fantastic new memories.  They are a great way to stay occupied and share a few laughs while on the road!  To help you get started, here are a few of the best road trip games for adults.

When I was a kid, there were few things better than getting to spend a few uninterrupted hours playing Pokemon on my Gameboy, grooving to the latest NOW! CD, or playing tiny board games with my sister. But now, most of us spend our car trips either driving, or glued to our phones the whole time. That’s perfectly fine — we all know how important car selfies are. But isn’t taking a holiday road trip with your friends also an opportunity to, I don’t know, actually talk to your friends?

But despite the fact that I love to travel, especially by car, doesn’t mean everyone does. In fact, I think most people loath road trips because they can seem so long, tedious and boring. Since we take road trips all.the.time, with several planned later this summer and fall, I thought I would share some of our favorite activities and games that help pass the time… because let’s face it, even though I love the “adventure” the open road brings, after several hours in the car you need a little something to help pass the time!

Everyone in the car has to choose an unusual color for a car (purple, yellow, mint green, etc.), and you get points for every car of that color you see. You could also make the game interesting by allowing passengers to steal points if they spot another passenger’s color first. Or, you know, you could hit each other every time you see your color, because adulthood.

No matter how good the tunes or the scenery, every car journey is significantly improved by a solid rotation of driving games. By now, you’ve spied all there is to spy, and asked about a million more questions than 20, so up your game game with these eight — all suitable for people old enough to hold a license. Is that Jennifer Lawrence at the stoplight? Eh… probably not.

Road Trip Conversation Starters: Not only is the open road a great place to think, it is a great place to for an in-depth conversation. Talking to another passenger, about serious topics or fun, silly questions; is a great way to not only bond but pass the time. I created a fun printable that has some great road trip conversation starters for couples. Some of these may be topics never discussed, while others may have been discussed before but due to life, the answers may have changed. In this game, participants have to call out “Padiddle” every time they see a vehicle with a headlight out.  The last one to say padiddle has to do something for the other person.  In the couples version of the game, this might be to give them a kiss or give them a neck massage.

I am so glad that I have learned how to do many of these car care tasks on my own; so that I can get my car road trip ready every time I want to hit the open road. One thing that is SO easy to do, is change the air filter. Not only can a clean air filter increase acceleration and horsepower, it prevents dirt and dust from entering and damaging the engine.

Since an air filter is so easy to change, I have gotten in the habit of doing it myself. I confess, changing an air filter by yourself can seem intimidating at first, but is a simple as popping the hood of the car, releasing a latch and sliding the old air filter out and slipping in the new one in. I can even conveniently pick up air filters, like FRAM Extra Guard Air Filters, while I am stocking up on groceries, household items and other road trip essentials at Walmart. To find out what model FRAM Extra Guard Air Filter you need for your car, you can look online or use the special and easy to use product finder in the auto department at Walmart.

Decide on a common word that will be off limits for the duration of the car trip. It doesn’t have to be a swear word, just a common word that everyone will use at least once during normal conversation. Try words like bathroom, cow, phone, etc. to try and trip people up. You can use real money, or have the offending passenger write their name on a scrap of paper and put it in the jar. The person with the most money or names in the jar has to buy the car a round of drinks at your destination, fill up the gas tank, or do something else of your choosing.

Pick another car on the road, preferably one with a few passengers. Don’t be a creeper, but everyone in your car should at least get one good look at everyone. Once you’ve seen them, take turns deciding who these people are. Maybe they’re ex-circus performers on the run from the mob. Maybe they’re all sister wives on the way to a wedding. Whoever comes up with the most outrageous/accurate/hilarious story, wins.

Pit Stop: Making stops on a road trip is necessary. To make them more fun and to have something to look forward to on a long car ride, I created these fun “Pit Stop” tags. I usually place a city, town or landmark (like a state line) on these cards and then write a fun activity or game (like the ones above) on the card. Another option is to make it a surprise and put a fun snack or treat, new CD, puzzle book, etc. in a paper lunch sack and staple the card on the front. Having a fun snack, an interesting place to stop or a new game/activity to look forward to can make a long trip more bearable! Click here to download these free printables!

Similar to good ol’ “Slug Bug,” every time you spot an out-of-state license plate, you can hit everyone else in the car. If you’re traveling with your significant other, you can turn the punches into caresses, instead. This game is perfect if you’re traveling to a tourist destination like Disneyland or Las Vegas.

Six degrees of separation is a theory that everyone in the world is connected via six or less relationships.  In this game, one person names two different film or television stars and the other people in the car must try to find a link between the two in six steps or less.  For example, you might say William Shatner and Hale Berry.

We all dream of perfect empty, winding roads, but the reality of driving is clogged, endless highways. Here's how to make them tolerable with nothing that you don't already have in your car.

This one is best played when you're driving your grandparents to the senior center. The rules are simple: whenever you spot a car with a headlight out, you shout 'Padiddle.' Everyone then has to shout it, too. The last one to shout it has to remove an item of clothing. RacerFree explains why it's approved by lecherous fathers everywhere.
