Famous British car brands roll off the tongue almost as easily as famous British bands or authors, but in reality it’s been decades since any of these brands wasn’t owned by one of the global automotive giants. However, dany of the cars retain their British identity and make use of the wealth of design and manufacturing expertise that still thrives in the UK. Here we look at ten ‘British’ brands and who actually owns them.

Mini is a very stylish and trendy British car brand which has its admirers all over the world. The primary two-door Mini was manufactured by the British Motor Corporation since 1959 till 2000. It was initially sold under marques Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor, as Mini became an independent brand only in 1969. This small and elegant car proved to be the British icon of the 1960-s. Mini’s performance models got the name ‘Cooper’ in honor of the British racing idol John Cooper. Sport cars Mini Cooper S can boast of three Monte Carlo Rally victories in 1964, 1965 and 1967.

The British car market grew by 5.1% during the first quarter of 2016. Ford and the Fiesta were the top-selling car brand and model. March 2016 set new records for car sales in Britain with more than half a million cars sold for only the third time in British automobile history.
March is traditionally the most important month for new car registrations in the UK. In March 2016, a new record 518,707 cars were registered in Britain for the first time. This was the highest monthly figure since the current registration system was introduced in 1999 and only the third month ever for British car sales to have been more than half a million cars in a single month.
There were only minor changes in the composition and rank order of the ten most-popular car models in Britain during the first quarter of 2016. The British seemed to have fixed habits in car selection, however, with the exception of the VW Polo and Vauxhall Mokka, all other top-ten models had weaker sales than a year ago.
In fact, the brand came to prominence after a series of sports cars which brilliantly performed in overseas competitions. In particular, Jaguar brand was crowned with success after five tremendous Le Mans 24 Hours victories in the 1950-s. However, the company has changed several owners throughout its history, including British Motor Corporation, British Leyland and Ford. Since 2008, the marque belongs to the Indian company Tata Motors.
AC Cars, formerly known as ‘Auto Carries’, is the oldest British car manufacturer. It has been manufacturing vehicles for more than 110 years and still continues to create impressive rides that will simply blow away your mind. For now, the company hasn’t been manufacturing any vehicles, but after signing an agreement of a joint venture with the US, it might be possible that a new model might be released this year.
This morning, the United Kingdom woke up to the news that it had built a total of 443,581 cars between the start of January and the end of March this year, it’s strongest opening quarter in terms of production since 2004. The figure is up 10.3 per cent on the same period last year, after which manufacturers in the UK went on to build a whopping 1,587,667 cars in 2015. At the current rate, one new car rolls off the production line somewhere in the UK every 16 seconds. If the trend continues, Britain could soon surpass its personal best of 1.9 million units, set all the way back in 1972. The stats have been put together by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). According to chief exec Mike Hawes, the boost in manufacturing shows there is a big international demand for British-made motors. “Much will depend on economic and political conditions in key markets,” he explained. “But with several brand new global models starting production here in the first quarter alone, the prospects for future growth look bright.” Of the 443,581 cars made in the first three months of 2016, roughly three quarters of them were exported abroad, an 11.1 per cent increase on last year. And of all the manufacturers based in the UK, the most prolific were Jaguar Land Rover, Nissan, Honda and Toyota. It’s a timely reminder that not only does Britain make some cracking cars, but it also manages to build them in huge quantities as well. The company was founded in 1963, originally launched in 1973 and introduced its first vehicle in 1974, named the Caterham 7, which is regarded as one of the most iconic sports car of the 20th century. Apart from sports cars, the company manufactures normal road vehicles, the most popular being the Caterham 21.
Jaguar is a luxury car brand produced by Jaguar Land Rover. Jaguar cars are on the roads since 1935, though the manufacturer itself – Swallow Sidecar Company – appeared much earlier, in 1922, and initially specialized in motorcycle sidecars.

Far from being an encumbrance, McLaren has thrived, first in the realm of Formula 1 and other racing series, and more recently with road cars including the groundbreaking McLaren F1, launched in 1992.
