The 2016 Scion FR-S is a leading light in the sub-$30k sports car field. The Scion FR-S delivers an unbeatable combination of lightweight design and excellent chassis balance, coupled with a rear-wheel drive layout that makes the most of the low center of gravity afforded by its boxer 4-cylinder engine. Some might complain about the 200 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque produced by its 2.0-liter mill, but this is a car that was built for track day shenanigans, not drag race glory. Our recommendation is to avoid the 6-speed automatic transmission and stick with the 6-speed manual that comes standard with the car in order to get the most enjoyment out of the Scion’s package. In 2015, Scion tweaked the suspension to more closely match the FR-S’ sibling, the Subaru BRZ.

Conclusions Overall, is this list perfect? Not even close, but then again, no list can be. There are many factors that go into the car-buying process, and many of them are deeply personal, nuanced reasons, to which buyers adhere with an almost religious fervor — Ford vs. Chevy, front- vs. rear-wheel drive, practicality over performance, and so forth — meaning no one metric can ever be definitive. Perhaps the most interesting takeaway is that the Miata, the Subaru BRZ, and the Ford Fiesta ST — all small cars that value sportiness above all else — each fell by the wayside to cars with a more balanced approach. A similar factor left cars like the Chevy Spark EV and Ford C-Max Hybrid SE in the relegation zone for their singular push for efficiency. Last year, the Ford Mustang celebrated its 50th anniversary and a ton of changes. No longer purely a muscle coupe, the 2016 Mustang positions itself as a luxury option in the higher trim levels. The base model offers plenty under $30k, though, with a 3.7-liter V6 engine rated at 300 horsepower and 280 ft-lbs of torque. There are plenty of tempting optional features available with the Ford Mustang, and chances are you’ll still come in below our price target.

This is a sporty little coupe that will definitely catch attention when it rolls down the road. Coming in at an MSRP for a base model at $29,990, this is certainly at the top of the line for coupes under 30k. However, the somewhat higher price tag may be worth it for the Nissan 370Z.

The list of great new cars over $30,000 is a long one, but it’s the surprisingly fantastic quality of what’s below that benchmark that shows off the state of today’s new-car market. What follows is our ranking of the best new vehicles you can buy right now for under 30 grand. After poring over data from both the manufacturers and the government, we developed our own in-house metric, weighing everything from technology, to design, to power and fuel economy — and while mindful not to let personal opinion sway the ranking, we threw in some subjective criteria like looks, comfort, and handling. With some truly desirable crossovers, sport sedans, and even pony cars all making the cut, the results, while imperfect by their very nature, are eye-opening to say the least. We’ll be updating this list periodically, as new cars, new features, and new pricing become available.

We dig the Charger’s duds. It’s evolved, it’s distinctive ,and it has serious presence. The Pentastar V6 makes 292 horsepower, and that’s good enough to haul the admittedly husky sedan to 60 in 6.5 seconds—just a second off what the 2005 Dodge Charger R/T did 10 years ago with a 350-hp Hemi underhood. That car didn’t have a miraculous 8-speed auto; this one does. Instead of a bargain-basement penalty box, it’s a quick, comfortable, handsome, and unabashedly American sedan for less than $30k.

Listen, it’s super-easy to option a Mini Cooper S well past $30K, but exercise restraint, and you shall be rewarded—with more power, the tossable nature you’re accustomed to, and at long last, an interior that puts usability ahead of retro-cuteness. Oh, the retro lives on, to be sure, but the new Cooper S is a bit more serious in its mission to deliver a viable GTI alternative. It’s fast and fun, but take note—the real secret handshake may not be the S at all. The base 3-cylinder turbo Cooper is a snorty, joyful thing, and it’s cheaper still.

At a starting price of $17,845, the Mazda 3 is one of the cheapest cars to make our 20-Best list. That’s no surprise to Mazda watchers, and a stiff chassis and perfect (seriously, perfect) suspension setup make for a car that punches way above its weight. Mazda’s 2.0-liter four-cylinder seems a little winded with its 155-hp, but the resulting 41 mpg rating buys back any lost goodwill. The hot ticket though, is Mazda’s 184-hp 2.5-liter, which still manages 40 mpg. Even better, both engine options are available with a 6-speed manual. If all cheap cars were this good, folks wouldn’t think to improve them.

It’s not a sports car, but when you drive it, you may think you’re in one. The Mazda6, ranked No. 3 in midsize cars, puts the fun in family sedan. Mazda also enjoys its status as the winner of the 2017 Best Car Brand.

You might not have expected it, but this decade has brought a plethora of fantastic budget performance cars that are leagues better than their predecessors. In a world that supposedly no longer cares about cars, the people who do still care are spoiled for choice.
