No. 14: Lincoln Luxury Though some of Lincoln’s vehicles earn decent reviews from critics, a few models dragged this brand to the bottom of the pack. The Lincoln Navigator, a large luxury SUV, is long overdue for a redesign (despite a refresh just a year ago), and the MKZ luxury midsize sedan just can’t keep up with rivals that offer better quality materials and sportier performance. Lincoln’s working on updating its lineup though, and has plenty of potential in the pipeline. No. 7: Hyundai Luxury Though Hyundai typically focuses on making affordable vehicles, it’s a relative newcomer to the luxury market, and a fairly successful one at that. In fact, Hyundai just spun off the upscale Genesis lineup into its own sub-brand. The 2016 Genesis coupe and Genesis sedan do pretty well in our rankings, keeping up with most competition in performance and quality, and beating them handily in terms of price. The Genesis models support the Hyundai Equus, a large luxury sedan, which doesn’t rank quite as well. No.1: Porsche Luxury Porsche earns the honor of Best Luxury Brand for 2017, thanks to its lineup of performance-oriented coupes, sedans, and SUVs. Several models in the current Porsche lineup hold the No. 1 spot in their class’ rankings, and the rest of them don’t fall too far behind. Critics offer almost unanimous praise for Porsche’s performance options and build quality. Perhaps the brand’s main drawback, at least from the perception of the average consumer, is that Porsche’s high prices ensure exclusivity. Acura is a luxury brand owned by Honda with a range of cars and SUVs. Acura vehicles typically fare well in our rankings, but there’s one notable exception this year, the 2017 Acura ILX. This car is at the bottom of our luxury small car rankings, thanks to underwhelming reviews from critics, who say it lags behind the competition in terms of performance, interior comfort, and interior quality. Acura makes several good cars, but buyers can do better than the ILX.

Jaguar’s positioning amongst the best luxury brands is based on its tightly-curated stable of sedans and sports cars, plus a recently introduced compact SUV. In terms of each vehicle’s rank within its class, there’s a lot of variation. For example, the midsize XF is at the middle of its class because critics feel competitors are simply better, while the new F-Pace immediately impressed reviewers and took the No. 2 spot in the luxury compact SUV category.

No. 9: Infiniti Luxury Infiniti, a luxury brand owned by Nissan, offers an array of upscale coupes, sedans, and SUVs. According to our reviews of Infiniti’s current model lineup, critics tend to like the vehicles decently; they just find them generally underwhelming. Most Infiniti vehicles fall somewhere in the middle of our rankings in their respective categories, thanks to average performance and quality, but they do tend to have good safety and reliability scores. Most American consumers probably don’t think of Volkswagen as a luxury brand, but the company’s recent efforts to move upscale resulted in a couple of qualifying vehicles: the CC, a four-door coupe, and the Touareg, a midsize SUV. Both models are outdated and, per experts, simply aren’t competitive. The Touareg’s MSRP is $7,000 more than newer midsize SUVs from more established luxury brands.
