Hollis Johnson The results of Consumer Reports’ latest Annual Reliability Survey are out, and Lexus and its parent brand, Toyota, repeated their 1-2 finish in last year’s survey. The survey is based on information gathered from the publication’s subscribers who have “owned or leased over half a million vehicles, from model years 2000 to 2016, with a smattering of 2017s, covering more than 300 models.” The survey ranked 29 brands. Consumer Reports categorized the top eight brands as “more reliable,” while brands ranked ninth through 18th were classified as “reliable.” The 11 brands at the bottom of the rankings were categorized as “less reliable.” Check out the complete rankings at Consumer Reports. There are many reasons Americans will choose to purchase one car over another. Brand loyalty, cost, and customer service all can have an impact on which cars Americans decide to purchase. Of course, the quality of the vehicle itself — its reliability, handling, and safety — is likely an important consideration for most buyers. In the latest edition of it annual Car Brands Report Card, Consumer Reports ranked 30 major car makes based on these factors. According to the report, Audi produces the best overall vehicles of any major brand, while Fiat rates as the worst among the 30 brands.

American cars have had a long and rich tradition both in the United States and throughout the world. Famous for their muscle vehicles, but also for the classic ones, the American made cars list boasts on 3 companies and at least 9 important companies that have made history over the years. There were roughly 1800 American car brands between 1896 to 1930 but just few were able to survive the tough competitive market. Hence just a handful of auto manufacturers opened after that period in America, that are still well known today.

While buyers may not consider it a priority in their purchases, quality and safety do appear to have a meaningful impact on sales. Among the top-rated makes, nearly all were among the 10 top-selling brands in the United States in 2015 or had among the largest increases in sales compared to 2014. Sales of only one of the better-rated brands on the list — Volkswagen, which had to deal with its emissions scandal last year — declined over that time. Meanwhile, annual vehicle sales at Fiat, Dodge, and Cadillac, all among the worst-rated brands, declined.

However, it is ‘The Big Three’ that united the best American car brands and survived through times. They are General Motors, Ford and Fiat Chrysler US. Joined by several other companies, these giants form what is one of the most influential car industries in the world.

Founded by legendary entrepreneur Henry Ford, the company pioneered mass production of cars by introducing many innovations to the industry, such as assembly lines, and made cars affordable to middle class. Today Ford is a global automotive brand selling millions of vehicles worldwide.

From the start of its history, Chrysler marketed their vehicles under different brands depending on price tags and purpose, including Dodge, Plymouth and DeSoto. The American car manufacturer was on the brink of bankruptcy several times, but survived in 1970s and 2000s. Today Chrysler is owned by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles US and produces mass-market models.

To answer that popular query, we have compiled a list of American-brand cars, SUVs, and trucks selected based on the Overall Score, which factors road test, reliability, owner satisfaction, and safety. And all are recommended by Consumer Reports. We omitted categories where no American-branded model achieved a recommendation because of road-test score, reliability, and/or safety.

Lincoln boasts notorious history as one of the best American luxury brands, being Ford’s division for most of its time. The manufacturer supplied limousines for many US presidents, including J.F.Kennedy. The 2016 edition of the report has similar results to Consumer Reports’ findings on reliability. The majority of the top 10 makes for overall quality are also among the top 10 in J.D. Power’s ranking as well. All five of the worst car brands, according to Consumer Reports, are among the least dependable makes according to J.D. Power.

The Consumer Reports data cover 30 brands based on road-test performance, reliability, safety performance and active safety aids, and owner satisfaction. We also reviewed the results of JD Power’s 2016 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, which rates car makes based on the number of problems per 100 vehicles. We also considered 2015 U.S> sales, as well as the change in sales from the previous year, as listed in manufacturer press releases.
