WILLISTON Vt. Five teenagers are dead and multiple others injured after a series of crashes that took place along interstate 89 in Williston on Saturday night, CBS affiliate WCAX reports. Debris and devastation littered Interstate 89 Sunday morning — where five Vermont teenagers were pronounced dead. Late Saturday night police say a driver in a pick-up truck, heading the wrong way on the highway, collided head-on with the teens’ car.Debris from a wreck that occurred on Interstate 89 in Williston, Vermont, on Oct. 8, 2016. They are: Mary Harris, 16, of Moretown; Cyrus Zschau, 16, of Moretown; Liam Hale, 16, of Fayston; Janie Cozzi, 15, of Fayston; and Eli Brookens, 16, of Waterbury. Passerby Paul Swann pulled over to help, but the victims’ car had already burst into in flames. “I wish that I had some way that I could help somebody because standing there seeing a car full of people go up in flames, it doesn’t feel good to feel helpless,” Swann said.Police had received over a dozen calls about the truck and were already responding to the area the crash happened. A Williston Police officer arrived at the scene first. “That officer went down to try and extinguish that fire. In the process of trying to extinguish that fire, he looked up and noticed that someone had jumped into his cruiser and took off traveling southbound with the emergency lights still activated,” said Vermont State Police Captain Michael Henry.Police say the cruiser was stolen by 36-year-old Steve Bourgoin moments after the Williston officer arrived. After heading south a short distance, Bourgoin allegedly turned around and drove back north towards oncoming traffic and back to the scene of the first crash, hitting several other vehicles including the pickup, which was still in the middle of the interstate. “He was probably doing 100 miles an hour or so in the cruiser when he hit. WCAX-TV Multiple emergency crews responded and transported five additional victims to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. “Some of the members have been firefighters for 15, 20 years and this is by far the worst incident that they have ever seen in their entire career. It was described as just truly horrific. There really just is almost no words to describe a scene like that,” said Williston Fire Department Senior Firefighter Prescott Nadeau.Bourgoin was taken into custody at the scene and then transported to the UVM Medical Center. He was listed in critical condition Sunday night. Several people injured in crashes caused by the cruiser were taken to the hospital, but authorities could not say how many were treated. They said none of the injuries appeared to be life-threatening.

Lt. Gonzales said that one car was headed south on Argentine Road and was carrying four people. The driver, a 22-year-old, and a passenger in the back seat are both still alive but are in critical condition at an Ann Arbor hospital. A front seat passenger and a back seat passenger were both killed in the crash.

In the car that was going east on M59, Lt. Gonzales said that the driver, a 39-year-old, was critically injured. A front seat passenger, 36, and two people in the back seat, both 70 years old, were all killed in the crash.

During a press conference Wednesday morning to provide updates of the crash, Michigan State Police Lt. Mario Gonzales said that a driver went through the stop sign on Argentine Road at M59, and collided with the other car going east on M59.

Four people were in each vehicle. A 70-year-old man and a 70-year-old woman, both of Macomb Township, and a 36-year-old woman were passengers in one of the vehicles. The three of them were killed. The driver of that car, who is a 36-year-old man, is in critical condition at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was flown to the hospital.

Records from the state Registry of Motor Vehicles show Burson was ticketed for speeding five times between 2004 and 2015, but did not have a crash in her driving history. Police cited her for speeding in Westport, Canton, Sturbridge, Stoughton, and Warren, records show.

Burson’s boyfriend, Matthew Gray, said Burson had planned to attend a party Sunday, but he and three relatives said they don’t know where she was headed when the crash happened at 12:11 a.m. Monday.

Five crosses and other memorials had been placed at the crash site Monday afternoon, according to the Mason City newspaper, and high school students there said one of the victims was a classmate of theirs.

Now, the 31-year-old Burson is also dead, killed early Monday when State Police say her 2011 Infiniti G37 struck another vehicle carrying four college students. Authorities said she drove the wrong way on Interstate 495 in Middleborough.

On the college campuses where Diggs, Galvin-Jutras, Fisher, and Licata studied, school officials said grief counselors were available. The students were headed back to their colleges from the Middleborough home of Diggs’s mother when they were killed, a relative has said.

“I’m not mad at him. I can’t hate him. I can’t,” she said. “If he lives and has to live with the fact that he killed two of his friends and three other people, that’s enough of a punishment. He was just a baby too. They didn’t set out to hurt anybody and I know that.”
